The Claiborne County Commission approved the county's fiscal-year 2026'27 appropriations at a reconvened meeting June 29, adopting fund-by-fund budgets that together back the county's operations for the coming year. The approved operating plan includes a General Fund appropriation listed in the resolution as $17,928,261 and a General Purpose School Fund total of $49,221,282.
During debate on the appropriations (Res. 2026-062), a motion to grant county employees a 5% raise failed for lack of a second. Commissioners later adopted an amendment proposed by Commissioner Joe Brooks to provide a $1.00 per hour raise; the amended appropriations resolution passed by roll call 17 for, 1 against. The record shows Commissioner Whitt Shuford voting against the final motion.
The commission also adopted the county's property tax levy for the year beginning July 1, 2026, in Res. 2026-064, setting the combined rate at $2.34 per $100 of assessed value. The resolution provides the fund-by-fund breakdown that together produces the $2.34 rate.
Commission leaders said the budget document adopted by reference contains line-item detail for departments and capital projects. The commission also approved a schedule for commissioner and committee pay and confirmed rules for year-end accruals and transfers.
What happens next: the budget and levy take effect July 1, 2026, and line-item details are available in the official adopted budget referenced in the resolution.
