Roscommon County to pursue removing Lake St. Helen’s winter level, board authorizes outreach and court petition

On Jan. 14, 2026 the Roscommon County Board of Commissioners adopted Resolution #2026-01-02 directing county liaisons, legal counsel and engineering consultants to begin public outreach about removing the established winter lake level for Lake St. Helen and, pending stakeholder input, to file a petition in Roscommon County Circuit Court to amend the lake level order.
The resolution notes an engineering inspection found structural concerns with the Lake St. Helen control structure and identifies a fixed-crest weir design as a preliminary option that would maintain a year-round summer level and remove the ability to conduct seasonal drawdowns. The board approved annual expenditures over $10,000 for operation and maintenance activities and specified that costs should be reimbursed by a lake level special assessment district to the extent permitted by Part 307. The resolution passed on a roll call vote with Ayes: Milburn, Morley, Wolfsen, Sensor; Nays: None.
