Board approves renewal of South Dakota Army National Guard lease for shared campus space

The Meade School District board voted to approve a renewal of the lease, maintenance and use agreement with the South Dakota Army National Guard after administrators described changes to the footprint and payment terms.
The board packet states the existing agreement expires on 2025-11-01; the motion before the board asked members to approve a replacement that defines school space, joint-use space and the Guard’s exclusive-use area. Business Manager Brett Burdett presented the item and the board called the question after brief discussion. The board approved the motion.
Superintendent Wayne Wormstead and staff explained the updated lease narrows the acreage compared with the 1975 agreement to include shared-use areas and the exclusive Guard footprint plus roughly an additional acre and a half on the northeast side where a future addition could be sited. Burdett said the district’s responsibilities under the renewal include grounds maintenance and snow removal and that the district would receive $15,000 a year for maintenance, excluding custodial services.
Board members noted the Guard’s long-standing partnership with the district; the motion passed without a roll-call vote recorded in the minutes and the chair announced “motion carries.” The district said the Guard retains the right to use the joint space in the event of national security needs.
