New Rochelle honors local community advocates and educators

The Champions of Change ceremony honored several adult community leaders for long-term service. Betsy Matthews presented Stephanie Bartee Allen, introduced as a lifelong New Rochelle resident who has worked in health care and served on the Municipal Housing Board and the NAACP executive board. Allen expressed gratitude to local supporters during her remarks.
Hollis Bueger introduced Valerie Cadet Simkins, described as a first-generation Haitian American educator and assistant principal at New Rochelle High School who has worked on programs to close opportunity gaps. Simkins said she and her family chose New Rochelle and thanked the community: "To have those children see me and to see that work, and see how hard we work just to make the schools amazing and excellent for them because it's what they deserve."
