Roscommon County awarded $50,000 state funds to rewrite wildfire protection plan; RFP issued

Emergency Director Vanessa Varner updated the board on the county's Community Wildfire Defense planning efforts and said Roscommon County scored well on a federal grant application but was not awarded federal funds. Varner said the county did receive $50,000 in state funding to rewrite its community wildfire protection plan, a no‑match agreement signed Jan. 7; she said the county issued an RFP for a qualified consultant with proposals due Feb. 20.
Varner asked to present a proposed contractor at the Feb. 25 work session and, if possible, obtain approval that day so work could begin Feb. 26. She noted a rewrite typically takes 6–9 months and the project completion deadline under the state agreement is Sept. 15. "We scored an 88, which is really good. However, it wasn't successful," Varner said about the federal application; she added the state grant will allow the county to proceed with a rewrite on an accelerated timeline.
