The Floyd County EMS Advisory Council voted Aug. 5 to ask the Board of Supervisors to collect a property-tax levy of up to $0.69 per $1,000 of assessed valuation to support emergency medical services, with the council specifying the request not to exceed $669,000 annually and proposing a periodicity of up to five years. The special meeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m. by Keith Starr.
Council members said the Board of Supervisors had voted down the council’s earlier recommendation to seek $669,000 per year over 10 years. Council discussion focused on whether a shorter funding period and a rate target tied to a $669,000 annual cap would be more likely to secure Board approval while still covering unforeseen expenses and supporting all EMS agencies that serve Floyd County.
"Motion made by Dawn Staudt to request that Board of Supervisors collect up to $0.69/$1,000 property valuation," according to the meeting record. The motion was seconded by Dawnett Willis and passed. The council recorded that the timing of its next meeting would be decided after the Board of Supervisors responds to this request.
The council approved its agenda earlier in the meeting and adjourned after the tax-request vote. The meeting record lists five voting members present: Keith Starr, Dawnett Willis, Dave Luett, Dawn Staudt and Jeff Sterling; two non-voting members (Jim Jorgenson and Marty Parcher) and a public representative from Charles City Press.
