Kay County approves MOA with Kaw Nation for Peckham Road project; commissioners report bridge, culvert and maintenance work

On Jan. 5, 2026 the Board of County Commissioners approved a Memorandum of Agreement between the Kaw Nation and Kay County to develop and improve roadways on the Nation’s Tribal Transportation Program route system within the county. Commissioner Jason Shanks said the agreement relates to the Peckham Road Project in District 2.
Commissioners also provided Road and Bridge updates: Commissioner Shane Jones reported crews picked up road trash and serviced equipment; Commissioner Jason Shanks said crews were "blading and hauling rock to Fork Rd. between 'T' and 'U' St." Chairman Jeff Kreger reported crews hauled sand and shale, installed a culvert on Stateline Road between 108th and 124th Street, cleaned ditches on Prospect and "O" Street, and bladed roads district-wide.
The MOA authorizes cooperative transportation services between the county and the Kaw Nation; commissioners approved the agreement by unanimous vote. Work described in the reports reflects ongoing district maintenance and a near-term planned focus on completing the Fork Road rock haul and the Stateline Road culvert installation.
