Hanover CSB: School-based mental health program at risk after school board funding shift

The Hanover County Community Services Board Legislative Advocacy Committee discussed the viability of the county’s school-based mental health (SBMH) program after staff reported that recent changes in school board priorities leave only one year of funding guaranteed. Chair Carol McDaid said the committee wants clearer figures about the program’s financial outlook and how many additional positions or dollars would be required to sustain services.
Staff told the committee that the county has funding for two SBMH staff positions but questioned whether continuing the program under the new funding environment "makes sense." Chair Carol McDaid said she is prepared to raise the issue with outside officials because, she argued, "education and mental health are important issues for the incoming administration." Staff member Ivy Sager said she "would provide that information as soon as possible," and the committee requested those details be shared with CSB members before the Human Services Annual Report is presented to the Board of Supervisors.
