Huachuca City’s Town Council opened discussion on whether tiny homes should be allowed within town limits by classifying them as accessory dwelling units (ADUs) during a Jan. 29, 2026 work session. Dr. Jim Johnson presented the staff recap and technical options for adapting local code to accommodate tiny-home ADUs; the item was opened for discussion after a motion by Mayor Johann R. Wallace and a second from Councilmember Christy Hirshberg.
Johnson summarized core regulatory choices for ADUs, saying, "Can be classified as an Accessory Dwelling Unit," and listing potential constraints: lowering side setbacks "from 7' to 5' or 3'"; limiting one ADU per single-family lot; permitting attached or detached ADUs; and requiring each ADU to have a separate entrance but be served by the same water, sewer and electric utilities as the primary house (no separate meters). He also noted the recommendation that ADUs be accessed from the main street rather than from alleys and that ADUs meet the same design and property maintenance standards as the primary residence.
Council discussion did not include a final ordinance or vote on these changes. The presentation and ensuing discussion were framed as an informational and policy-development step; the council may give direction to staff at a subsequent meeting if members want draft code language or proposed ordinance language returned for formal action. The motion to open the item was procedural only and did not enact regulatory changes.
