Sheriff's office reports July arrests, pursuits and a child-abuse investigation

The sheriff's office representative delivered a month-long summary of July incidents in Eaton County and nearby jurisdictions, saying it was a "busy month in Delta Township." The report detailed a July 5 traffic stop in which deputies arrested a driver after finding methamphetamine; a July 11 incident involving an OWI, a hit-and-run and a loaded Derringer found under a seat; and several retail fraud arrests at local Walmarts. The speaker also described a multi-agency pursuit in mid-July that ended when a suspect was found after entering a river and attempting to hide under a downed tree.

The representative described a child-abuse investigation originating when Sparrow Hospital reported a 2-month-old with extensive bruising; deputies assisted protective services and turned the investigation over to the detective bureau. Commissioners followed with questions about jurisdiction and bond practices: Commissioner Haskell asked whether the Sparrow incident occurred at a Sparrow facility in Eaton County, and the sheriff's office representative said the records "it doesn't say" but that when parents live in Eaton County the county typically responds. When asked about jail capacity the sheriff's office representative said they had available beds and reiterated that bond decisions are made by judges.
