Nobles County approves sheriff's unmanned aerial vehicle policy after public hearing

The Nobles County Board of Commissioners voted to approve the Sheriff's Office use of unmanned aerial vehicles at its Aug. 20, 2024 meeting after a public hearing. Sheriff Ryan Kruger explained the agency's intended uses under Minnesota Statute 626.19, which include response to emergencies, crash reconstruction, training, and other limited circumstances the statute allows. The hearing drew no public comment and the board closed the hearing before taking action.
Commissioner Gene Metz opened the public hearing (motion), and on a subsequent motion by Commissioner Robert S. Demuth the board approved the policy. "It was duly passed to approve the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles," the minutes state. The action followed the statutory list of allowed uses in Minnesota Statute 626.19 as cited in the meeting packet. The board record does not show any dissenting votes.
