Children’s unit reports workforce strain, to host childcare licensing Lunch and Learn tied to $5,000 forgivable loan

Social Services Supervisor Joan Stordalen told the board that staff in the Children’s Unit are feeling the strain of ongoing community challenges, which has affected child protection work and family stability. Stordalen said recent detentions and related community circumstances have made some families reluctant to share concerns, complicating investigations and casework.
To support recruitment of childcare providers, Stordalen said she and licensor Melissa Schallock will work with Brianna Sanders, City of St. James Economic Development Director, to host a Lunch and Learn outlining the childcare licensing process and to promote the City of St. James’ $5,000 forgivable loan for individuals pursuing licensure. Stordalen also noted that case managers are documenting use of motivational interviewing in SSIS, and that related new revenue from the state will be tracked when payments begin arriving.
