Eaton County staff outline proposed $15,000 annual fee for township planning and zoning services

County planning staff updated the board about a proposed Eaton County contract to provide planning and zoning services to townships for a fee. Brandy told the board the proposal would maintain current service levels and charge participating townships an annual fee of $15,000.
Brandy said the county held a first meeting with township officials in July and scheduled a second meeting for Aug. 26. She also reported the county received a grant from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) to update the county master plan and zoning ordinance; the proposed update would include language to enable the county to provide services to cities and villages as well. When asked whether the $15,000 fee assumed all townships would participate, Brandy said the current figure is based on buy-in from all 11 townships and that the county would have to rework the numbers if some decline. If townships do not buy in, she said, those jurisdictions would be left without county-provided planning services unless an alternative arrangement is negotiated.
The board did not take action on the contract at this meeting; staff said they would continue discussions with township partners.
