County expands electronics and agricultural-plastic recycling; Recyclepalooza draws hundreds

Solid Waste staff told commissioners the county plans to buy an electronics trailer and roll out monthly electronics collection stops by the end of the year. The department reported more than 750 registrations for this weekend's Recyclepalooza and said "we have over 2,000 tires registered," and that the mobile recycling program has diverted over 20,000 pounds of materials since August 2024.
Commissioners asked how tires and electronics are disposed of or reused. The Solid Waste speaker said contracted vendors "will do anything from, washing and chipping them, and they may end up as a football stadium, astroturf" or be processed into playground mulch. The department also described an agricultural-plastic program (greenhouse film, pallet wrap, silage tarps), charging some farmers roughly $0.08 per pound for processing and shipping where end markets exist. Staff said an EGLE planning grant will fund the trailer and most equipment, but the grant requires a 20% local match.
