Cass County authorizes insurance and settlement funds to repair Pine River transfer station and Pillager shop

Cass County authorized the use of Minnesota Counties Intergovernmental Trust (MCIT) insurance proceeds to repair the Pine River transfer station and accepted settlement funds to repair damage at the Pillager maintenance shop.
Facilities Capital Project Manager Tom Boege reported that the Pine River transfer station tipping building suffered a fire on Oct. 30, 2025 that caused heavy soot and smoke damage, electrical harm and other losses. He said total damages and costs were $187,647.99 with a $2,500 county deductible, leaving MCIT proceeds of $185,147.99 to cover cleanup, rewiring and miscellaneous repairs; the Board authorized use of the insurance proceeds.
Boege also reported that a Waste Partners truck struck the Pillager Highway Department maintenance shop on Oct. 24, 2025; temporary repairs cost $1,680 and contractor bids for permanent repairs ranged from $15,400 to $60,771. Waste Partners agreed to pay; Cass County received and deposited $17,080 and the Board authorized use of those settlement funds to complete repairs and reimburse the Highway Department for temporary work.
