Board names commissioner to Metropolitan Solid Waste Planning Group; first regional meeting set for July 22

Brad Hansel, the county environmental services manager, asked the board to appoint one commissioner to serve on the Metropolitan Solid Waste Planning Group, a requirement of the 2024 regional solid waste policy plan. The first joint meeting is scheduled for July 22, 10 a.m.–12 p.m., at the MPCA offices.
The board moved to appoint a commissioner to serve on the regional planning group (mover: Commissioner Anderson; second: Commissioner Lynch) and approved the appointment by voice vote. Chair and other commissioners emphasized representing county taxpayers at the meeting and noted the topics on the agenda: MPCA updates, planning for large facility closures, data collection practices, preprocessing options and curbside organics collection compliance for cities with populations above 5,000 by 2030.
Hansel told the board this will be an annual joint commissioner and staff meeting to coordinate regionally and ensure consistency in solid-waste planning. The board asked staff to represent ratepayer and taxpayer concerns during discussions of potential preprocessing and curbside-organics costs.
