Cass County Board authorizes sale of Ah-Gwah-Ching site to Walker for workforce housing at $150,000

The Cass County Board on Jan. 6 authorized the sale of a 29.32-acre parcel known as the former Ah-Gwah-Ching site to the City of Walker for $150,000 to support workforce housing development.
City of Walker Administrator Hope Fairchild and Cass County Economic Development Director Mike Paulus told the board the city faces a workforce housing shortage and has worked with the county and local partners; Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity is identified as the developer for an anticipated 15–17 lots pending plat approval. Commissioner Neal Gaalswyk offered Resolution No. 03-26 authorizing the sale, and the Board adopted the resolution. The resolution states, "The sale price of the property is approved at $150,000." The Board recorded a 4–1 vote: Ayes — Gaalswyk, Haaland, Kangas, Bruns; Nay — Lilyquist.
Board members clarified that once the sold parcel is conveyed it would not be available for future county buildings and that remaining parcels would require city sewer and water service for development. The resolution authorizes county staff to complete closing documents and requires proceeds to be reported to the Department of Revenue as required.
