Residents press council to act on Street Smart report and reopen 1st Street access

Eileen Jones delivered an extended personal appeal about traffic generated by the closure of 1st Street and requested reasons for maintaining the restriction: "What I'm asking for is, respectfully, by the next council meeting, could you please provide me with some very good reasons why the sign at 1st Street should remain?" she asked. Other speakers suggested targeted engineering remedies such as additional crosswalks, speed humps and enforcement at problem intersections.
Council members said they would follow up with the borough engineer and the police chief to review engineering and enforcement options and reported plans to engage on both near-term enforcement and longer-term design changes.
