The Greene County Board of Supervisors voted to accept state-designated bonus funds and apply them only to employees funded through the Commonwealth Compensation Board, declining to add local dollars to extend the bonus to county-funded positions.
Miss Shaffer (speaker 3) explained the mechanics: because the bonus is for fiscal year 2026 it must be paid in June and the state money effectively works as a tax credit to the locality. She told the board that accepting the $45,007.16 and applying it to compensation‑board salaries would not require adding local funds. One supervisor who estimated the total cost for a county‑wide payout during debate said the aggregated full payout calculation “comes to $2,266,009 59” as part of the deliberations; board members raised concerns about optics, fairness to county employees, and contingency-fund use. After debate the board moved, seconded and approved the motion to accept only the state portion and apply it at the comp‑board salary level; a roll‑call vote recorded ayes from all members present.
Board members said they value county staff and noted recurring state-driven bonus offers complicate budgeting. Several supervisors asked staff to consider adding clearer bonus policy language to future personnel policy updates so ad hoc state bonuses do not repeatedly strain local contingency funds.
