Council directs aggressive, equal application of code enforcement

Town Manager Suzanne Harvey told the council staff has heard repeated resident requests for stricter enforcement of the Town Code covering zoning, health and safety, building standards and neighborhood preservation. Harvey said staff and the police department are prepared to pursue active enforcement, but warned the effort could prompt legal challenges and additional costs.
Mayor Johann R. Wallace said the council wanted “active enforcement” and emphasized equal application of the law. Council members present supported the direction, noting feedback from a recent Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) meeting had raised the issue.
The council did not adopt an ordinance at the meeting; rather, members directed staff to proceed with enforcement planning and advised being mindful of potential court costs and the need for consistent application.
