Wilkes County TDA reports $130,000 District K carryforward and quarterly reporting plan

Trevor Whitson, chairman of the Wilkes County District W Tourism Development Authority, and Accountant Becky Martinez presented the TDA’s FY2026 financial report and answered commissioners’ questions about carryforward funds and staffing costs.
Whitson explained that when District K and the town-level TDA were abolished and combined into District W, some carryforward funds from District K—$130,000—remained and were dedicated to a "find your fund" campaign to promote tourism businesses outside municipalities. Whitson told the Board about the program and confirmed that approximately $87,000 of those funds have been spent, leaving roughly $33,000. Commissioner Shirley Randleman asked for and received confirmation that the TDA would provide the county with quarterly financial reports and an end-of-year accounting as required by the law that created District W.
Commissioners discussed differences between the former District K (outside municipalities) and the consolidated District W (all of Wilkes County except a portion of West End Elkin inside Elkin town limits), and noted the TDA’s professional-services line includes director and contract staff costs. Whitson and Martinez said the TDA meets monthly and is working to improve partner participation and outreach.
