CAC hears concern about water use if proposed Strasburg data center proceeds

At an EDC breakfast recap, county staff said a developer preparing a Strasburg site for a proposed data center told the community it would disclose the client before building; staff flagged potential significant water-use impacts and regulatory questions for the county to monitor.
Lemuel Hancock recounted an Economic Development Council breakfast where a developer who worked on the Tech Zone in Culpeper presented on data center development. Hancock reported the developer said his firm would disclose the client before building and stressed the firm is “committed to aligning its work with the goals of the comp plan.” Hancock told the CAC the developer is currently covering utilities while the site is being prepared for a proposed Strasburg data center.
Hancock warned that if the data center becomes a reality, local water use could be significant and the county should follow developments closely; he noted that once the site is built out, energy billing may move to a behind-the-meter structure. The CAC did not take regulatory action at the meeting but agreed members should monitor Board of Supervisors and permitting steps related to any future proposals.
