County and agencies report stretched wildfire response, local closures and coordination needs

Multiple land-management agencies briefed the board on active incidents and the operational strain of the current fire season. A forest service representative said agencies were managing Willow and Aspen Acres fires and that crews had been mobilized across districts; officials described bringing in additional resources so frontline crews could take rest rotations. The county and partners are coordinating to provide staging and fire-camp locations and to assist with evacuated livestock.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife described expanded operational roles — road closures, pre-evacuation planning and support for moving an endangered cutthroat trout strain out of a threatened hatchery. On public compliance, the CPW representative said, “For the most part, people are following restrictions. No campfires,” but noted isolated violations were being ticketed and monitored.

Agencies discussed vehicle-use management in recreation areas, including a recent gate at Saint Elmo’s (intended to limit access during mud season) and continuing questions about ownership and maintenance responsibilities for some road segments. Commissioners and staff agreed to continue coordinated messaging to the public, work on targeted signage and to convey county support for field teams while seeking local flexibility on future restrictions.
