Bamberg County treasurer announces retirement after nearly 18 years; deputy appointed by governor

Alice Johnson, Bamberg County Treasurer since her May 1, 2008 swearing-in, told the county council April 14 that worsening cancer-related health issues have forced her to retire after almost 18 years in office.
"I based my role as treasurer on honesty, integrity, experience and dependability," Johnson said, and asked residents and colleagues to "please continue to pray for me and I will be praying for everyone as well." She told council members she had accepted the duties after being approached by former County Treasurer Ann Clayton and later was sworn into the office.
Administrator Joey R. Preston and council members thanked Johnson for her service. The minutes state that Bamberg County Deputy Candace Fralix has been appointed by Governor Henry D. McMaster to serve out Johnson’s term; the minutes describe Fralix as "honest, dependable and a lady of integrity."
