County lobbyist warns of stalled state budget; advises ongoing advocacy

Bob Steinberg, the county’s lobbyist, told the commissioners that state lawmakers had not yet reached agreement on the 2025–26 biennial budget and that the absence of a final budget leaves many county funding requests unsettled. “There is no budget yet,” Steinberg said, and he forecasted that conferees would likely pause work in July and August and resume in September.
Steinberg described the difference between the House and Senate approaches — the Senate pushing further tax cuts while the House takes a cautious stance — and reminded the board that, under a continuing resolution, existing funding continues at current levels until a budget is adopted. He said county priorities have been shared with legislators and that the county’s legislative contacts will keep advocating while the budget talks continue.
