County reports favorable budget balance; FEMA funding changes and sentencing update noted

Finance Director Patrick Dolan reported the county budget closing this month is operating with a favorable balance, with the general fund approximately $900,000 favorable and the jail budget favorable without using undesignated fund balance. "General fund should be $900,000 favorable," he said.
EMA Director Mike Smith reported roughly $40,000 outstanding in storm reimbursements and said national discussions to raise thresholds for federal disaster relief could eliminate most FEMA funding for smaller events. District Attorney Meaghan Maloney updated commissioners on a sentencing in Superior Court after a defendant pleaded guilty to six counts including trafficking that resulted in a death; the sentence included 8 years in state prison, 4 years in federal prison and 4 years of probation. DA Maloney praised the Sheriff's Office for investigative work and said she is authorizing an additional Assistant DA from Kennebec County to assist Somerset.
