Ways and Means accepts Eaton County audit that found no findings

Nate Balderman, the audit principal who led the engagement, told the Ways and Means Committee the final financial statements were issued March 19 and the auditors issued an unmodified (clean) opinion for Eaton County. "We did issue an unmodified or a clean opinion," Balderman said, adding that the financial statements were "fairly stated in all material respects."
Balderman said the firm reviewed component units (including the health facility and road commission) and examined internal controls for planning purposes. He said there were no repeatable audit findings this year and no findings on the county’s single-audit work of federal programs. He did note one management-letter comment related to a drain-clearing reconciliation that administration has agreed to review. "We did note one item in that," Balderman said of the management letter, describing it as an area for enhancement rather than a material finding.
Commissioners asked whether the audit discovered fraud, waste or abuse; Balderman replied that the audit is not a fraud examination and that nothing of that type came to the auditors’ attention. The committee then moved a resolution to accept the Eaton County audit (listed in the packet as 09/03/2024); by voice vote the committee approved the resolution. The controller’s office and finance director said staff will follow up with the detailed budget and expenditure reports tied to the audit at a later presentation.
