The board approved a vacation of specific sections of Bass Drive and Shelf Drive near Seacrest Lake after hearing planning staff and a petitioner representative explain the history and the lack of public use of the road segments.
Area planner Matt Sandy said the planning commission reviewed the request and recommended vacating the remaining portion, noting a prior west-side vacation and a separate 16-foot lakefront easement dedicated when the earlier portion was vacated. Petitioner representative Steve Snyder described 20th-century platting and argued the eastern Shelf Drive segment no longer provides public access.
Several nearby residents spoke in opposition. Dean Brankel said vacating the right-of-way would force equipment traffic through his front yard and damage private property. John Katie raised concerns about access to wells and grinder pumps used for maintenance. Planning staff responded that the easement along the lakeshore provides access for lakefront lots and that private enforcement will be necessary for any encroachments.
After closing the public hearing, the commissioners voted to approve the area-plan recommendation to vacate the identified portions of Shelf Drive and Bass Drive. Staff will record the vacation and return any necessary documentation to the county’s records office.
