Select Board approves appointment to Conservation Commission; members raise trail tree hazards and amphibian crossing signs

Beth, representing the Conservation Commission, briefed the Select Board on two items: (1) multiple leaning and downed trees in Sullivan Woods that volunteers have been clearing but that may pose safety and liability concerns, and (2) research into temporary amphibian/turtle crossing signage to warn drivers during seasonal migrations. “We periodically, in Sullivan Woods, have down trees, but more worryingly, precariously tilting trees,” Beth said, noting the commission’s annual budget is $200 and that professional removal may be necessary for some hazards.

The board discussed liability for volunteer chainsaw work and supported beginning an ash‑tree inventory (noted as a likely multi‑year project) to prioritize removals. On the amphibian crossings, Beth suggested seasonal folding nylon signs that the highway crew could deploy; board members noted any permanent post would need to meet state breakaway hardware standards. The board also unanimously approved the appointment of Diana Irios (applicant introduced in the meeting) to the Conservation Commission after the Chair moved and the board seconded the motion.
