Grand Boulevard redesign: hatched no-parking areas, single parking lane and shared driving lane for bikes

Members reviewed the Grand Boulevard configuration and the crosswalk upgrades proposed in the county repaving plan. Staff described shaded or hatched pavement near intersections to deter parking and a single white line that will serve as a parking lane; bicycles will be expected to share the driving lane with cars when parking is present.
"So the configuration is that these areas when you get close to the intersections, they're gonna be hatched for no parking," a committee member said, describing the plan to use hatched markings and a parking lane rather than curbwork. Another member noted the prior red paint had been removed and likely will be replaced with striped white painting.
Committee members said visual changes have worked elsewhere to slow drivers. A small parking survey showed an average of two to five cars per day parked on Grand Boulevard, and members argued that on-street parking can act as traffic calming even without raised curbs.
The consultants will supply final striping and crosswalk options; several members urged careful placement of painted markings and potential planters if additional traffic-calming measures are later required.
