Teller County seeks Certified Local Government status to preserve historic sites

Teller County commissioners approved a resolution May 7 to request Certified Local Government (CLG) status from the National Park Service and History Colorado. County staff and the historic-preservation advisory board advocated the designation as a way to compile a countywide survey and inventory of historic buildings, sites and landscapes and to access CLG grant programs for preservation.
Administrator Ross Herzog walked through the resolution's recitals and said staff wants to assemble scattered historic information and mark or protect remaining sites — for example, Gillette Flats and the former Pinnacle Park site near Cameron — to preserve local history. The board voted unanimously to authorize the chair to submit the CLG application and required documentation.
