Council weighs $4,000 UDOT signs to enforce no‑engine‑braking ordinance

Mayor Richard L. Sorensen told councilmembers that UDOT will install two no‑engine‑braking signs for about $1,500 each plus labor — roughly $4,000 total for two signs — to enable enforcement of a recently adopted ordinance. Councilmember Sandy Hunter, who lives near the intersection of 500 South and Highway 39, said she hears motorcycles more than engine brakes and questioned whether the signs were necessary.
Lieutenant Cowley from the Weber County Sheriff's Office told the council signage may serve as a deterrent but cautioned that signs alone do not eliminate the need for occasional enforcement. Because the council did not move to purchase the signs at the meeting, the issue remains under consideration; the mayor asked staff to obtain formal cost estimates if the council wants to proceed.
No formal action was taken at the Sept. 5 meeting.
