Some Clinton County townships say local zoning is expensive and time-consuming

Township officials that operate their own Planning & Zoning described the administrative burden and costs of local systems. Dallas Township’s Pat Feldpausch said administering Planning & Zoning is time-consuming and that a single incident could create significant liability without umbrella insurance from the county. Bengal Township’s Nick McDonald said their township pays for its own planning functions and does not carry the same insurance coverage noted by others.
DeWitt and Bath representatives reiterated that local Planning & Zoning requires both funding and staff and that some townships partner regionally—such as DeWitt and Bath—to manage infrastructure and growth pressures. Officials asked whether the county could help with collaboration or insurance if the county office is dissolved.
