Blair council approves five-year home-occupation permit for firearms sales with security conditions

The Blair City Council voted to approve a five-year home-occupation conditional use permit for Kenner Hatfield to sell firearms to law-enforcement clients and private contacts from his residence at 1987 Kelly Drive. Community Development Director Jeff Beierman explained background for home-occupation permits and noted the planning commission recommended approval 5–0. Hatfield told the council he currently operates a manufacturing business in Omaha for approximately 15 years and holds a federal firearms license.
"We'll have a safe room with safes inside," Hatfield said when describing security measures. "It'll be a secured entrance to the location, secured entrance to the safe room, and then safes in which the guns are stored." A local law-enforcement officer who spoke during the hearing vouched for Hatfield's reputation and safety practices, while a resident, Logan Baker, said the presence of firearm sales in a residential area was concerning to some but not by itself a reason to deny the permit: "So just because you're selling them, I don't think is a reason to deter from the residential area."
After public comment and council questions about safes and alarms, a motion to approve the CUP for five years passed by unanimous voice vote. The permit was granted with the security assurances discussed on the record; staff noted they can inspect if necessary.
