Commission names Kevin Hart chair, Paul Smith vice-chair for 2026; board assignments reviewed

The Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Commission appointed Commissioner Kevin Hart as chair and Commissioner Paul Smith as vice-chair for Commission Year 2026 during its Jan. 6 meeting.
After a brief procedural exchange, Commissioner Steve Gates moved to appoint Hart as chair; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Paul Smith and carried 5-0. Gates then moved to appoint Smith as vice-chair; the motion carried 5-0. The commission also approved the slate of commissioner representatives to ADLC boards with requested changes, including Commissioner Ed Beaudette volunteering to serve on the Greenway Service District.
Commissioner Hart said he will verify which board appointments are statutorily required, citing uncertainty about whether the Airport Board and Solid Waste Board must include a commissioner. He flagged that several boards either fail to meet on a required schedule or lack quorums, and said he will review organizing ordinances to "clean these up" so boards meet their obligations to the county.
