Washington County commissioners authorized the Highway Department to purchase two 2027 plow trucks from Baltimore Truck Center (Hagerstown) for $620,424 through a cooperative Sourcewell contract.
Randy Kettner, director of procurement, said the purchase will replace two 2007 Sterling Acterra dump trucks (one with ~86,671 miles and one with ~115,743 miles) and that the county’s vehicle policy recommends replacing this class of vehicle every 10 years. "The old trucks will be sold on the gov deals site," procurement staff said. Deputy Highway Director Zane Rall and other highway staff explained parts scarcity for older Sterling models and described a multi‑year plan to gradually replace the fleet.
Commissioners discussed whether to replace only the highest‑mileage truck or to accelerate replacement across the fleet; staff noted a multi‑year backlog and recommended staged purchases. The motion to authorize the purchase was approved unanimously (5-0).
