County approves $7,950 Trane controller upgrade to restore remote HVAC diagnostics at OAC

The Brookings County Commission approved $7,950 for a Trane Tracer SC Plus upgrade for the Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center, a one-time install the facility manager said would restore remote monitoring and diagnostic capability. Joe, OAC staff, told the commission the previous controller had been out of production and that recent cybersecurity legislation prevented remote access to the older software.
"What this is is our control panel which allows Trane to be able to remote view and diagnose problems," Joe said, explaining the value of remote service; he noted that without this controller, routine remote troubleshooting would require dispatching a technician from Sioux Falls at cost, while the new controller should allow most problems to be diagnosed remotely. Commissioners voted to approve the purchase after asking whether the cost was one-time and whether the HVAC system's overall health justified the investment; staff confirmed it was a one-time install and the system was functioning well.
