Senior Connect seeks funds to shorten a growing meals-on-wheels wait list

Leanne Burrows, executive director of Senior Connect, said her agency delivered just over 36,000 home-delivered meals last year and is on track to provide close to 50,000 this year, with a wait list that rose to 67 in the previous week. “With additional funding…we could serve about 30 additional seniors for a year,” she said.
Burrows said Senior Connect operates five congregate sites and multiple hot and frozen delivery routes across Kaufman County; the requested increase would alleviate a roughly 20% shortfall between current capacity and demand. Commissioners acknowledged the need but said the county’s preliminary budget cannot absorb all nonprofit increases and advised prioritization.
The agency’s request was presented as part of the nonprofits workshop; no final county allocation was decided at the session.
