Kaufman County leaders say they cannot meet $720,000 in nonprofit funding requests

The judge opened the Kaufman County budget workshop by telling nonprofit representatives the county will not be able to meet all funding requests this year: “We will not be able to reach that number either,” the judge said, referring to the total requests presented.
Commissioners and staff reviewed the scale of requests — about $720,000 in total this year, compared with $447,511 last year, an increase of roughly $273,000 — and discussed statutory limits on county contributions. One commissioner warned the county may be functioning as a support mechanism for nonprofits and urged focusing limited dollars on essential or mandated services. The judge said the county must protect employee compensation and county services first while doing as much as possible for nonprofits.
The meeting ended with a procedural motion to adjourn that carried by voice vote. Commissioners said they will return to the requests after reviewing the county’s preliminary revenue numbers and recommended commissioners mark priorities for allocations.
