County judge pauses jail expansion work, asks PRPC to help craft options

Potter County’s judge opened the Jan. 27 Commissioners Court by saying public and internal debate over a proposed jail expansion had become divisive and that further committee work should be paused while the court seeks outside help. “Because of the conflict surrounding this issue, I believe it is best that the court take time to reevaluate how to approach this issue before any further action,” the judge said.
The judge said he had contacted Mike Peters at the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission (PRPC) to assist in developing viable options that would “ultimately lead to the best possible outcome for the citizens of this county.” He thanked members of the ad hoc committee for their service but said he would not ask them to continue putting time into the project now. The court did not take any formal action that day on the expansion; commissioners indicated they would return to the topic after the PRPC review.
