Commissioners approved chip‑sealing contracts covering interstate and local routes in the Mitchell and Watertown areas at the May 15 meeting.
Sam Weisgram reported that By 2 Minutes Paving was the low bidder on project 4 (Mitchell area) with a $6,121,000 bid, about 18.4% above the engineer's estimate, and on project 5 (Watertown area) with a $4,278,000 bid, about 21.2% above the engineer's estimate. Commissioner Rosen asked whether fuel prices were appearing in bids; Sam said fuel and trucking haul costs were contributing factors and also pointed to project volume and multiple locations as drivers of price.
The Chair called for motions on each item and the commission approved the awards by roll call. Department staff will handle contracting and schedule work across the effected routes.
