The South Dakota Department of Transportation Commission approved award of a major interchange reconstruction contract for Interstate 90 Exit 46 at Piedmont at the May 15 meeting.
Sam Weisgram said Heavy Constructors was the low bidder for the interchange reconstruction, with a bid of $77,697,000 — about $6.94 million (9.8%) above the department's engineer's estimate of $70,757,000. He told commissioners that, after reviewing the bid and considering current market conditions, the department found the pricing reasonable and recommended award. "Dollar wise, we believe that 70 nearly 78,000,000 is the largest," Sam said when commissioners noted the contract's size.
Commissioner Joel (identified by the Chair) congratulated staff and commissioners on reaching the milestone and noted the project has been years in the works; Sam said the project will take about three years to complete. The commission voted to approve the award by roll call; staff will proceed with contract execution and project administration.
