The Lawrence City Budget & Finance Committee voted July 28 to send authorization to expend $177,400 for intersection safety signal equipment to the full council with a favorable recommendation.
Elia Elise Reyes, director of project management and development, told members the equipment is part of the region’s Vision Zero safety plan and covers eight city locations including South Broadway & Andover Street; Broadway & Lowell Street; Broadway & Manchester & Daisy Street; Lawrence Street at Maple Street; Lawrence Street at Haverhill Street; Haverhill Street at Jackson Street; South Union Street at Market Street; and Mary Mac Street at Parker Street. Reyes said MassDOT procured the equipment and the city is responsible for installation, which must occur within 90 days.
Chair Stephanie Infante read an itemized funding breakdown and confirmed a grand total of $177,400 for the equipment package. Councilors raised local maintenance and visibility concerns—Councilor Mark LaPlante asked staff to note intersections where stop signs or signals are obscured by vegetation and requested follow-up as part of the Vision Zero implementation. The motion to forward the authorization to the full council passed on roll call.
