Supervisors approve $314,138 remount for aging ambulance to save tens of thousands vs. new vehicle

County emergency services staff asked the board to approve a contract with PL Custom to remount the patient compartment from Unit 7840 (a 2014 Terastar with more than 160,000 miles) onto a new Ford F-550 chassis.
Pete Kilsner told supervisors the remount contract price is $314,138 and that the approach yields an estimated savings of $80,000–$90,000 compared with a new ambulance, which he said now costs over $400,000 and has a 20‑month-plus delivery window. "A new ambulance now is over $400,000 And we have a 20 month delivery time on that unit," Kilsner said.
A motion to approve the remount contract was made and seconded; the board voted unanimously to approve the resolution presented at the meeting. Staff said remounting will upgrade the existing module and expedite return to service compared with ordering a new unit.
