Board moves to advertise animal-control and dog-tag changes after state law update

Dinwiddie County staff told the Board of Supervisors on Sept. 16 that proposed amendments to Chapter 4 of the county code would align local rules with recently enacted state law and give residents a new dog‑licensing option.
The first change would update the county’s compensation limits for livestock and fowl killed by dogs to match Senate Bill 1,000, which “raised those amounts to $1,000 and $25 respectively,” staff said. Officials also proposed, as an option, requiring owners to first pursue remedies against the dog owner if known. County staff said claims under the existing section are rare in Dinwiddie and that no claim has been granted in recent years.
The second amendment would let owners purchase a three‑year dog tag for individual dogs at a $10 price point, rather than the current one‑year $5 tag; the three‑year option would not be available for kennel licenses and would be issued under policies developed by the treasurer’s office. “The 3 year dog tag would cost $10 and be issued in compliance with the policies to be developed by the treasurer’s office,” staff said.
With board consensus the amendments will be advertised for an October public hearing and possible action. No public speakers signed up at the meeting; staff said they would return with the advertised text and the treasurer’s implementing policies.
What’s next: The board will hold a public hearing in October before deciding whether to adopt the code changes proposed for Chapter 4.
