Maya Akins of West Petersburg told the board her neighborhood faces "serious safety and infrastructure challenges" including narrow streets where two vehicles often cannot safely pass, frequent speeding and spinouts, and repeated stormwater flooding that damages property. "I'm asking the board to order a traffic study as the first step toward real solutions like speed limit signs, sidewalks, and traffic calming measures such as speed bumps or raised crosswalks," Akins said.
Akins said stormwater flooding has been a decades-long problem and cautioned that pending housing development could aggravate drainage and flooding. She asked for a clear timeline for traffic and stormwater work and for community engagement so residents can be part of planning and keep informed.
Board members acknowledged the concerns, said staff would follow up, and the chair asked to speak with Akins after the meeting to begin coordination with county staff.
