Court backs staff coordination to pursue state veterans home on county land

Bexar County Commissioners Court voted on Oct. 14 to authorize county staff to continue final coordination for donation of approximately 27 acres at the southwest corner of Cagnon Road and Ponder Road to the Texas Veterans Land Board for construction of a Texas State Veterans Home. The court approved an accompanying resolution of support and directed staff to pursue state-funded surveys and environmental assessments.
County and state officials described the veterans homes as a joint-constructed, jointly funded model in which the Veterans Land Board provides a 35% match and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs covers 65% of construction costs. "We're excited about this opportunity," Tony Dale, executive secretary of the Texas Veterans Land Board, told the court, noting the state maintains and operates the homes and that the VLB can accept donated land but is prohibited from purchasing land for that purpose under state law. Court members said the facility would meet a growing need for long-term nursing care for veterans in South Texas and voted to authorize staff coordination so the state can move forward with grant and site work.
The motion directing staff to proceed with surveys and assessments was moved by Commissioner Moody and seconded by Commissioner Calvert. The resolution specifies that final land-transfer approval will be returned to the Commissioners Court for a future vote once details are finalized.
