Staff informed the Agricultural Preservation Board that a 2025 change in state farmland preservation law requires ag boards to hold public hearings when land in a Voluntary Agricultural District (VAD) is proposed for development. The report noted the change could draw more attention to loss of farmland and that staff will coordinate with county legal counsel to prepare a draft ordinance update for APB consideration.
Board members were advised to share the change with Planning staff and the county's VAD farmers. The staff presentation framed the statutory change as both a procedural requirement and an opportunity to increase public awareness of development pressures on farmland; a draft ordinance will be returned to the APB for discussion before any BOCC action.
