Steuben County's administrative committee on Jan. 15 authorized a $750,000 intra-budget transfer to cover an overrun in assigned counsel expenditures.
County manager Chris told the committee that assigned counsel lines were "negative 381,000" across multiple case types and that the transfer from undistributed fringe within the 2025 budget would make up obligations expected through March. Committee members moved and approved the authorization by voice vote.
Members noted the county receives a portion of hourly reimbursements that will offset 2026 costs and discussed that assigned-counsel adjustments are an annual process. No individual dissenting votes were recorded on the motion.
The committee's action is procedural authorization to move budgeted funds; staff said they expect to monitor reimbursements and return with any required year-end adjustments.
