BLM outlines SWIP North timeline, Tuscarora geothermal exploration and large proposed solar project

Brady Owens, Wells Field Office staff with the Elko District Bureau of Land Management, reviewed several major projects in northern Nevada, starting with the SWIP North transmission corridor. "It's a large transmission line going from Idaho down to Ely," Owens said, and noted BLM is advancing cultural-resource reviews and construction/operations planning while a tentative 2026 construction window remains "subject to change."
Owens summarized exploratory geothermal activity near Tuscarora: Crescent Valley Geothermal is pursuing an eight-well project that is moving through baseline data collection toward environmental analysis; Owens said it may be exploration rather than immediate production. He also described a proposed Rooster Combs Solar site of roughly 2,500 acres located in neighboring Lander County and characterized it as adjacency rather than a project sited inside Elko County. Owens cautioned that large renewable projects will face complex constraints, including raptor and eagle migration corridors and sage‑grouse habitat.
